Tom Baker is Chief Information Officer of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) [1], co-chairs the W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group [2], and consults on projects related to the Semantic Web and Linked Data. He recently co-chaired the W3C Semantic Web Deployment Working Group, which standardized Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS), and currently serves as a member of the W3C Semantic Web Coordination Group. Tom holds an MA and PhD from Stanford University in Anthropology (1989). After working as a research sociologist in Italy, he acquired a masters in library service from Rutgers University, then worked as a researcher at the German National Research Center for Information Technology (later Fraunhofer) and at the Goettingen State Library, where he had leading roles in German and European digital library projects. Tom has had a leading role in the community around Dublin Core since 1996. Seeing Semantic Web standards as a 'language of data', he is committed to the notion of a healthy ecosystem of open vocabularies as a basis of semantic interoperability and their preservation as a supporting technology for our cultural memory.
